January 2023 Newsletter

Dear LAVMC Members,

December’s dinner was prepared and served by the Whiskey Bent Catering and it was amazing! How lucky are we to have Ray as a member of our club. Also talented, his mother Shirley Williams will be serving up soup for our January dinner. If you would like to serve up some delicious grub for a future membership meeting, let Kylin (secretary@lavmc.org) know! We are looking for cooks for the rest of the year. All food costs are reimbursed by the club!

Our general membership meeting is on Thursday, January 19th. The Bar opens at 5:30 and dinner is served at 6:15. The meeting will start at 7pm sharp. We are excited about this new year and we have a lot to talk about.

The club's Christmas Dinner was an absolute blast with several comical outfits and table decorations. Special recognition to Bud Christoferson for providing our holiday tunes for the evening. Our ugly sweater contest was won by Deanna Hearth, with Landy Cleaver coming in second place. Honorable mention goes to our director Erin Matheson and her husband for committing to the Christmas spirit with their over the top outfits. Our table decorating contest was won by Shirley Williams with her National Lampoons Christmas Vacation themed table number. Second place went to the snowman designed and built by Billy King.

We have many great events planned for the year ahead. We are hoping to host 5 more community concerts this year for us all to enjoy. We may be mixing it up a bit and adding to the fun. Stay tuned! We will be looking for volunteers to help put these on- if you love music and would be interested in helping out email Kristy (president@lavmc.org).

Our New Years Resolution this year is to bring Old Days ‘BACK on BELL’. We will be fundraising by hosting a series of Bingos, see event listing below. If you are interested in donating separately to this cause, let us know! Our first Old Days planning meeting of 2023 is January 16th at 6pm. In order to have Old Days on Bell Street we will need to meet fundraising goals and have plenty of volunteers. We hope to see you there! If you are interested in volunteering or heading up one of the subcommittees, email olddays@lavmc.org.

Lastly, membership renewal time is upon us. Payment is accepted via check, cash, or Venmo. Please be sure to state clearly in a check memo or on Venmo what the payment is regarding by notating “2023 Membership Fee” and any other details we may need to know.

A Message from Vickie Gill & Nancy Morgan:

Hello Former Tutors or Friends Who Can Forward This to Lots of Other Locals:

We're hoping to offer our Homework Help Program in the upcoming spring semester after a 2-year break. We're thinking about changing the format to a drop-in help program instead of assigning 1 tutor to 1 or 2 kids. I've talked to the principal & director of ACES at Olga Reed Elementary School, and they are quite excited about our local students being offered some extra help.

The Homework Help Program would be available Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday 2:30 - 4:00, as well as Wednesday 1:15 - 2:45. If you can volunteer 90 minutes once a week, please email me and I'll give you more information.

We can't fix everything, but we can fix some things. Let's try.

Thank you, Vickie Gill and Nancy Morgan
